About Neurofeedback

Many of my clients have never heard about neurofeedback prior to coming across my website or getting a referral from their doctor, so I wanted to create a space to show you how neurofeedback works and answer all of your most common questions.

IS NEUROFEEDBACK SAFE?

Yes, neurofeedback is completely safe and is not invasive. There has never been a case of anyone being harmed by neurofeedback in any way. All it is, is a form of exercise for your brain.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

You will see results from neurofeedback over time. Depending on what challenges we are addressing with neurofeedback, you may need between 20-60 sessions (sometimes more, depending on your personal situation). You may feel the difference after just a few sessions, but typically you will start seeing some real difference around session 15. 20 sessions is not a stopping point, it is a point for discussion. We may decide to stop or keep going depending on the progress you’ve made. Also, in some situations, around session 17-18, your brain will make a shift and we’ll have to make an adjustment and keep going, possibly at a different frequency.

HOW DOES IT WORK IF I'M ON MEDICATION?

Neurofeedback is not a replacement for medication. It works with medication as medication supports brain function while your brain is figuring out how to make adjustments. We NEVER recommend that you quit your medication during or after neurofeedback sessions – that decision is between you and your physician – we will be happy to speak to your physician about your progress.

Neurofeedback usually supports medication and our clients may feel better on their current doses. As we move forward with your sessions, you may begin to experience symptoms of being over medicated. We will refer you to your physician to assess your dosage needs. Some clients are able to stop taking medications or reduce dosages after completing neurofeedback training, but this varies from client to client.

Children with ADD (ADHD) may experience symptoms of stimulant side effects because as the brain function improves, they simply don’t need as much medicine. In most cases, your child’s doctor will reduce the dosage and the symptoms cease.

In summary, managing your medication during and after neurofeedback training is all about teamwork – between you, us, and your doctor.

IS NEUROFEEDBACK COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Most often, neurofeedback is not covered by insurance. However, we have heard of some plans that may cover neurofeedback (but we haven’t personally come across any). It is best to contact your insurance company and discuss coverage. If you speak to your insurance company representative and are told that your plan covers neurofeedback, please document date and time of the conversation and the name of the representative to avoid misunderstandings.

HOW LONG DO NEUROFEEDBACK SESSIONS TAKE?

Your first appointment will take around 2 hours. Each subsequent session takes approximately 45 minutes. The actual neurofeedback training period lasts a minimum of 30 minutes. Additional time is needed beforehand for sensor placement and adjustment. We also speak with our clients briefly before and after each training session to monitor how things are progressing. We reserve 45 minutes for each client to ensure that no one is rushed and that there will be time to discuss the results you are experiencing.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH NEUROFEEDBACK TRAINING?

For most conditions there are no adverse side effects due to the training when conducted by a competent professional. If an occasional negative reaction to training does occur, it is just an indication that the frequency is not correct and we need to make an adjustment. Symptoms will then resolve on their own. Typically, clients report positive effects. Someone undergoing training for migraines, for example, may report decrease in frequency and severity of the symptoms and an increase in efficacy of the medication (if applicable).
